Welcome to Maison Villebard
Having spent 11 years running a successful and popular biker friendly bed & breakfast and gite business on the Somme Great War battlefields in Picardy we became well known for our warm welcome and hospitality. We are both lifelong motorcyclists and always welcome fellow riders. We have secure parking, a bike trailer for emergencies and a workshop for minor repairs. The roads are made for bikes and we can offer suggestions of routes to try out. Bicycles are hugely popular in France and we welcome cyclists too, of course. We have bicycles to hire.
We regret that our accommodation may not be suitable for some disabled persons, as not only is the apartment accessed via a set of external stairs, but there are two more separate steps inside the apartment.
Our 200 year old farmhouse is nestled in its own grounds of about an acre set in a quiet area of rural France in the Limousin. We are located just north-west of Limoges, the capital of the Limousin, famous for porcelain production, in a region also famed for exquisite leather glove manufacture and with a lot of history to explore (see our Things To Do page). You will find plenty of information and local maps in the gite to help you plan each day.
Our guest accommodation comprises of a beautifully appointed first floor apartment available to book for a self-catering holiday. This gite has a private entrance and is fully fitted with a modern kitchen, shower room, two bedrooms, one being the master bedroom which has a 6ft double divan bed (which can split into two singles if required) and the other bedroom has two single beds. The living room area is light and airy with exposed beams throughout. We supply everything you may need for your stay and we include bedding and towels in the price. Guests will find a 'welcome pack' which includes tea, coffee, sugar and milk. We are happy to pick up some fresh foodstuffs for your arrival, if ordered in advance. There is free WiFi available.
There are medieval villages and chateaux to explore, beautiful scenery to gaze upon, the river Vienne is close by and there are many lakes. Some are open for public use with swimming, sunbathing and boating. There is a lot of local history in the region. The area was heavily settled by the Romans and there are still many signs of their occupation, including www.cassinomagus.fr. The Black Prince and Richard the Lionheart were both, in their time, the Duke of Aquitaine and Prince of Wales. There is a Richard Coeur de Lion and a Black Prince historic route that are ideal to follow and a great way to explore the region (routerichardcoeurdelion.com).
Moving into this century, it is worth a sobering visit to the remains of the village of Oradour-sur-Glane (www.oradour.info). A WW2 atrocity by the Nazi Waffen SS on 10 June 1944, killing 642 inhabitants and destroying the entire village which is now a memorial with many buildings still standing, burned out cars in the streets and sewing machines in the houses which were part of the local industry for making leather gloves.
We are within half an hour's drive of the International Airport of Limoges Bellegarde with flights from the UK: including Stansted, Gatwick, Southampton, Manchester and Nottingham. (With Ryanair you can get a return flight for as little as £20!) Car hire is bookable in advance at Limoges. We are about an hour from the TGV (fast train) station at Angouleme which is on the Lille (Eurostar) and Paris to Bordeaux line. If you catch the right train you can be in Angouleme from Lille within about 3 hours. The autoroute link to the A20 between Limoges and the north is less than hour's drive away. For those who want to drive or ride down, there are several Channel crossings to consider, including Brittany Ferries' Portsmouth daytime (5 hours minimum) or overnight crossings into Caen. Brittany Ferries also run a summer time Fast Catamaran Ferry at 3 hours into Cherbourg but you add an hour's riding down the peninsula.
We are just 1.5kms north of the village of Bussiere Boffy, and half-way between Bellac to the east and Confolens to the west and St. Junien to the south, all three towns have excellent shopping facilities! We are just north-west of the Massif Central and on the edge of National Forest and there are some terrific roads for those who enjoy bend swinging! (And we might join you!)
Our local village, Bussiere Boffy, boasts a very early church with a leaning, twisted spire, a walking route to see the medieval houses within the village, a café/bar which serves lunches and evening meals (on two nights they serve their own homemade pizzas to eat in or takeaway!). This café has a grocer's store attached which sells fresh bread and croissants every day. Some guests get breakfast there. There is a post office and a tiny Tourist Office (not always open!) to help you plan your days.
All you need to do it book with us, arrive, unpack and relax!

Who We Are
Martin Pegler

I have owned motorcycles since the mid 1970s, mostly BMWs and together we have toured much of Europe, but always returned to France. I was Senior Curator for Weapons for the Royal Armouries at the Tower of London and also the new museum in Leeds, Yorkshire. But in 2005, we decided to move to France and ran a motorcycle friendly B&B on the Great War battlefield of the Somme. After 11 busy and enjoyable years, we decided to retire to the Limousin and bought Maison Villebard, a 200 year old stone farmhouse.

Prior to moving to France in 2005, my career was as a P.A./Secretary in a variety of commercial companies, but I probably enjoyed working in higher education the most. We have had motorcycles for many years, touring large parts of Western Europe. I prefer driving my 20 year old sportscar now, but we still head out together on the bike. The region is great to explore with many medieval villages, vast lakes and chateaux - so pack up a picnic perhaps and one of our maps and head off for a day of delights!

Limousin

The Limousin

Before us unrolled a green and ever-changing countryside.
Silent, impenetrable, cut by thick hedges, filled with dark shadows and watered by running brooks.
No rivers, only streams...
No lakes, only pools...
No ravines, only valleys...
(From 'La Maitresse Servante' by Jerome & Jean Tharaud, 1923)
